MicrocynAH® FAQs

MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin Care

MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin care products can be used for the outer and middle ear of animals. Relative to use in the eyes, we recommend the MicrocynAH® line of eye care products.
MicrocynAH® is only to be used within the timeframe marked on the label of the product (expiration date). If used after expiration date, the product may not be effective.
MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin Care products are not bleach. Bleach is corrosive, toxic, will burn, generates fumes/vapors and is not safe for use on the intended applications of MicrocynAH®. In addition, stabilized bleach has a pH of >11. MicrocynAH® products are manufactured within an appropriate physiological pH range and typically do not sting when applied. They will not harm healthy tissue in the process of cleaning and debriding wounds.
They contain different ingredients because they are different gel formulas with varying intended purposes as indicated on the individual labels.
You may know due to the bottle leaking as a result of expansion of the formula in the freezing process. The bottle walls may collapse after thawing out or there may be evidence of ice in the container. We recommend storing at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not allow to freeze because product may lose its potency. After use, seal or close container.
We prefer MicrocynAH® to be used singularly per label indications. MicrocynAH® has no known contraindications and no known negative drug interactions. If you need to apply other remedies, such as fly repellents, it is recommended that you apply MicrocynAH® first and wait at least 60 seconds before applying any other products. We recommend that you advise your veterinarian of any treatment protocol you are following in addition to their recommendations. MicrocynAH® is not intended for use on systemic conditions.
If the product is a gel it should be cloudy. It must be shaken well prior to application. The liquid formulas are clear and should not be cloudy. In the event it is cloudy, you should not use it, but contact Oculus customer service at 1-800-759-9305 for product return and exchange if the product is still within the expiration date.
The transfer or decanting of MicrocynAH® products is not recommended due to potential contamination and/or ingredients being neutralized by undue exposure to air. Unfriendly container materials, even if ”unused” or “clean”, will contaminate the solution and can neutralize the product. For these reasons, it is recommended that MicrocynAH® products be used in its original container and configuration.
MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin Care is a proprietary formulation of hypochlorous acid based upon the proprietary and patented Microcyn® Technology platform. Each product SKU is a specially formulated for that particular application or indication.

MicrocynAH® works by mechanically cleaning and debriding the affected area while helping promote natural healing.
MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin Care products are unique from other animal wound cleansers/dressings because of its safety profile and shelf stability. Since MicrocynAH® products are formulated with quality ingredients including the patented Microcyn® Technology. They are safe for use on all animal species regardless of age and condition. MicrocynAH® Wound and Skin Care is non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-irritating, non-staining, and is safe to use on or around the eyes, nose, ear and mouth. It does not contain steroids, alcohol, tea tree oilor antibiotics. Unlike some existing brands of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) based animal wound care products, MicrocynAH® delivers solid and reliable shelf stability. Beware of HOCl products sold in translucent bottles, since they will degrade quickly when exposed to light.
The fact that MicrocynAD® does not contain antibiotics is significant due to the concern that overuse of antibiotics promotes resistance. The repeated and extended use of MicrocynAH® in cleaning and debriding the wound bed has no adverse consequences and does not promote resistance. In addition, if there are regulatory limitations for use of antibiotics, those limitations do not apply to MicrocynAH® since it is antibiotic-free.
This is nothing to be concerned about. This is a normal observation as a result of using MicrocynAH® for cleansing and debriding wounds since it increases the flow of both blood and healing nutrients to a wound site.
Microcyn_LogoThe patented Microcyn® Technology, from which the MicrocynAH® products are derived, have received 13 FDA 510k clearances for human wound care (the FDA does not issue 510k clearances for animal healthcare products). To demonstrate safety and effectiveness, there have been two major animal clinical studies and 30 human clinical studies conducted to date using the patented Microcyn® Technology. In it’s original formulations, Vetericyn™ did contain the Microcyn® Technology. However, beginning in 2014, the Vetericyn™ brand was renamed VetericynPLUS. As part of that transition, the original and patented Microcyn® Technology was replaced by a lower-cost and lower-quality hypochlorous acid. The new Vetericyn™ formulation has both stability and photostability issues, its effectiveness negatively impacted by exposure to light. Also, VetericynPlus has a low osmolarity (salt content) that creates an osmotic process when applied to mucous tissue or open wounds. This will create stinging or burning in the animal when applied, making the animal less willing to be treated with the product.
While there is a slight chlorine odor, this is due to a proprietary amount of free available chlorine (FAC) measured in parts per million which is not significant enough to cause stinging or pain.

Since there are no banned substances, steroids or antibiotics, MicrocynAH® tests free for competitive animals.

MicrocynAH® Dermatology Products

MicrocynAH® Hot Spot Spray and MicrocynAH® Anti-Itch Spray are a major advance in hypochlorous acid technology with the integration of the soothing skin protectant, dimethicone, into the formulations. Both products effectively help relieve the pain and itch of skin irritations, lacerations, abrasions and minor burns. The products are also cleared for the management of irritation and pain from minor sunburn. No other animal skin care product on the market today contains this unique formulation of HOCl and skin protectant dimethicone.
Hot spots, also known as acute moist dermatitis, are red, moist, hot and irritated lesions that are typically found on a dog’s head, hip or chest area. Hot spots often grow at an alarming rate within a short period of time because dogs tend to lick, chew and scratch the affected areas, further irritating the skin. Hot spots can become quite painful. Anything that irritates the skin and causes a dog to scratch or lick himself can start a hot spot. Hot spots can be caused by allergic reactions, insect, mite or flea bites, poor grooming, underlying ear or skin infections and constant licking and chewing prompted by stress or boredom.

Itching or pruritus is defined as an unpleasant sensation within the skin that provokes the desire to scratch. Itching is a sign, not a diagnosis or specific disease. The most common causes of itching are parasites, infections and allergies. There are many skin diseases that do not initially cause itching. Itching may develop because of secondary bacterial or yeast infections.

The FDA has now approved the use of dimethicone as a skin protectant in over-the-counter products and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel has assessed it as safe to use in personal care products.
